Why Farming: Retreating from Corporate Life and Technology

      · Farming

At Square Dance Farms, we often get asked the question: Why farming? It’s not the easiest path, and certainly not the most glamorous in today's fast-paced, tech-driven world. But for us, the decision to leave behind corporate careers and immerse ourselves in the world of sustainable agriculture was more than just a change of scenery—it was a calling. Here’s our story of why we chose farming and how it continues to shape our lives for the better.

A Life Defined by Corporate and Technology

Like many, we were part of the corporate grind for years, immersed in a world dominated by screens, constant deadlines, and the pursuit of material success. It felt like a race that never ended, filled with artificial benchmarks that left us disconnected from what truly mattered—nature, community, and a sense of purpose.

Technology, while innovative and rewarding, began to feel like a double-edged sword. On one hand, it fueled our careers, but on the other, it slowly siphoned away our energy, creativity, and connection to the natural world. There was always another email, another project, another deadline. It became increasingly clear that we were trading our time, health, and sense of fulfillment for fleeting rewards.

      The Call to Something Real

The more we sat in front of our desks, the more we longed for something tangible—something real. We craved a slower, more intentional life, one where we could feel the earth between our fingers, watch something grow, and see the direct impact of our efforts. The idea of farming began to take root in our minds as we realized that it was more than just a career switch; it was a lifestyle change.

We wanted to build something that mattered, not just for ourselves, but for future generations. Farming provided that opportunity. It promised a connection to the land, a focus on sustainability, and the chance to live in harmony with nature. As we started educating ourselves about sustainable agriculture, regenerative farming practices, and food security, the decision to move forward became clearer.

      Farming: A Path to Self-Reliance

One of the most appealing aspects of farming was the ability to rely on ourselves. Corporate life had taught us to depend on systems that, while efficient, felt disconnected from human values and the natural world. Farming, on the other hand, allowed us to reclaim control over our lives.

We started small, experimenting with gardening, livestock, and soil management. Every small victory, like the first harvest or seeing new life on the farm, reinforced that we were on the right path. Slowly, we began to retreat from the hectic demands of corporate life, replacing them with the rhythmic, fulfilling work of nurturing our farm.

      Farming Teaches Patience and Purpose

Farming is a teacher of many things, most notably patience. In contrast to the instant gratification of modern technology, farming requires a long-term mindset. It has taught us to appreciate the slow process of growth, to respect the land, and to find fulfillment in every small milestone.

It’s also a reminder of purpose. We don’t just farm for ourselves. Every season, every harvest is a step toward providing healthy, sustainable food for our community, nurturing the land for future generations, and contributing to a more sustainable world.

      Why We Continue Farming

While many may see farming as a retreat from technology and corporate life, for us, it is more of a return to what’s essential. Farming reconnects us to nature, to ourselves, and to our community. It reminds us daily that real success isn’t measured by promotions or profits, but by the health of the soil, the quality of our relationships, and the legacy we leave behind.

Square Dance Farms isn’t just a business—it’s a mission to live intentionally, sustainably, and in alignment with nature. By choosing to farm, we’ve embraced a slower, richer, and more meaningful way of life, one that we wouldn’t trade for the world.

For us, the question isn’t Why farming? anymore—it’s Why not?
